Donna Karan Bio
Donna Karan is a one-woman powerhouse who has made New York uptown dressing her signature. Her aim when she started out in 1985 was to dress women in comfort, to liberate them from the confines of Eighties power suits – plus she created DKNY for a younger customer with her daughter Gaby in mind. Today, Karan’s company is a lifestyle brand producing menswear, jeans, accessories, hosiery, fragrance and cosmetics.
She sold it in April 2001 to French luxury conglomerate LVMH for almost $250 million in cash. LVMH had previously acquired Karan’s license-holding company, Gabrielle Studio, bringing the total value of the sale to $643 million. She remains the designer of the brand.
Donna Karan was born into fashion in 1948 to a model mother, who worked on Seventh Avenue, and a haberdasher father. She studied at Parsons School of Design for two years before going to work at Anne Klein Donna Karan invented “the body” – one of the most practical items of clothing to come out of the Eighties.
